The time is the beginning of 1947.The location is the Convent of Our Lady of Rheims, a French Nursing Order. It is an open serving order providing nursing to the community of Denzil St David, a village some miles from Norwich, England. A flood in the Fen country has trapped two prison officials and their prisoner, Sarat Carn, who is on her way to the gallows for the murder of her brother. In spite of the evidence, Sister Mary Bonaventure is certain of Sarat's innocence. Just before the police launch arrives to rescue the officers and Sarat, a confession is forced from the real murderer.
